Food Box a “Shot in the Arm” for 1,200 Families

April 1, 2014—Tomorrow, April 2, 2014, 1,200 local food-insecure families will receive a free box of prepared food, fresh produce and other supplies. Using its community network, Central Union Mission identified eligible families and developed a distribution program to be staged at the Walmart store at 5929 Georgia Ave., NW. Feed the Children transported three semi-trucks full of food. PepsiCo sponsored this delivery and donated Quaker, Tropicana, Frito-Lay and other Pepsi products. Walmart and Bimbo Bakeries donated produce, bread and other goods.

According to Central Union Mission Executive Director David Treadwell, “Last year, some people waited in line for over four hours, so we know this food is greatly appreciated. This year we’ve added 400 more families to the donation list. Along with our generous partners, we promise to serve this community until hunger is eased.” Today 31,000 children in Washington, DC, do not know how they’ll get their next meal (Feeding America).

Ms. Willie Leake, program participant, noted, “This box from Feed The Children really helps out my family. We are grateful for the things like toilet paper and hand sanitizer,” useful items not generally available at food pantries, “and they lasted us close to a month.”

Each family will receive 25 pounds of food and produce plus 10 pounds of cleaning and hygiene items, some donated by AVON. At a retail value of $175, each box is designed to sustain four people for a week, allowing parents to pay other bills with the savings. Nearly 100 Walmart and PepsiCo employees, along with Central Union Mission Overnight Guests and volunteers, will donate their time to distribute food boxes.
