Washington, D.C. - Central Union Mission distributed 300 backpacks today to area financially underprivileged children ranging in age from Pre-K through high school. The Mission will distribute more than 1500 backpacks during the school preparation season. The distribution is part of their annual Operation Backpack program which the Mission has conducted for over 15 years.

"We look forward to seeing the children's reactions as they receive their school supplies for the year," said Executive Director David O. Treadwell. "We appreciate the support of our sponsors. Without their assistance programs like Operation Backpack which help relieve some of the financial burden that so many of our area families face would not be possible."

The distribution was held at Central Union Mission's headquarters at 1350 R Street, NW in Washington, D.C. and included a program and special appearance by Washington Capitals Mascot, Slapshot. The backpacks handed out featured a variety of back-to-school items including pens and pencils donated by the Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics.

"We are pleased to have Slapshot serve as part of our program this year," Treadwell continued. "His appearance and assistance was a welcome addition to an already successful event."

In 2010, Central Union Mission distributed 1400 backpacks to area children.
