Internship Opportunities

Central Union Mission has a wide variety of internship programs to fit your individual interests and educational goals. Our internships span our wide range of programs, providing a diverse and comprehensive educational experience in: social work, journalism, office and ministry administration, human resources, finance, marketing, development or public relations.

If you are passionate about our mission to serve homeless and hungry people in our community, we want to hear from you!

We accept internship applications on a rolling basis, including this summer, however typically our internships align with the academic semesters. Availability varies depending on departmental need, so check back frequently to see what our current offerings are.

Please note that all interns must commit to a minimum of 15 hours weekly for consideration, and all Central Union Mission internships are unpaid. Major Donor Intern

Description

Central Union Mission is seeking a highly motivated and outgoing individual to assist in donor activities.

This position is unpaid. Hours are flexible depending on the student’s availability and schedule, but we would prefer to have someone who is willing to commit to 16-20 hours a week.

Communications Intern

Description

Central Union Mission’s Communications Department is a fast paced, but fun team looking for interns to assist with writing projects. This internship experience can be versatile in scope. Although most time will be spent working on Development projects, an intern will have the option to spend some time with other Mission departments depending on interests and the programs’ current needs. 

This position is unpaid. Hours are flexible depending on the student’s availability and schedule, but we would prefer to have someone who is willing to commit to 16-24 hours a week. The intern will work out of our administrative offices located at 2600 12th St., NE, Washington, DC  20018.

Qualifications

  • Interest in advocating for low-income populations
  • Strong English writing skills

Graphic Design Intern 

Description

Central Union Mission is seeking an innovative and independent graphic design intern to assist with the creation of marketing and outreach materials. The intern would be responsible for assisting with the creation of a volunteer handbook and related print material. This internship is unpaid. 

Hours are flexible, but we would prefer to have someone who is willing to commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week during business hours. Some projects may also be done remotely and possibly outside normal business hours.

Qualifications

  • Be a currently enrolled student 
  • Available for work 10-15 hours per week for at least 2months (hours are adjustable depending on one’s schedule) 
  • Experience with graphic design programs like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign 
  • Can telecommute if desired 
  • Preferred: owns a laptop computer with Adobe programs like InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator or a comparable program 

Film Communications Intern

Description 

Our Communications team seeks an outgoing and self-motivated intern to develop videos or presentations for the Mission’s website, special events and social media outreach. This individual would help create interesting and compelling topics to capture. This internship is unpaid. Hours are flexible depending on the student’s availability and schedule. Some projects may also be done remotely and/or outside normal business hours.

Qualifications

  • Experience with video editing programs like iMovie or Final Cut 
  • Personable; able to conduct interviews
  • Desirable: a laptop computer with video recording and editing equipment and software 
  • Available for work at least 15 hours per week (hours are adjustable depending on one’s schedule) 

Development Intern

Description

Central Union Mission  is seeking a highly motivated and outgoing individual to assist our Development Department. The Development Intern will work closely with the Development Department staff while preparing for upcoming fundraising activities and special events. The Development Department is open to making this internship experience versatile in scope. Although most time will be spent working on Development projects, an intern will have the option to spend some time with other Central Union Mission departments depending on their interests and the programs’ current needs. This position is unpaid. Hours are flexible depending on the student’s availability and schedule.

  • Comfortable engaging with diverse groups of people from all socio-economic backgrounds 
  • Comfortable doing independent research 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite 

Additional duties may include:

  • Aid with correspondence between Central Union Mission’s donors, potential donors and vendors. This would include, but is not limited to: solicitation letters, thank-you letters, telephone and email outreach, etc.
  • Conduct research for and help organize our various charitable and fundraising events
  • Conduct research for our grant-writers 
  • Maintain databases of contacts 
  • Aid with social media outreach and campaigns

Volunteer Coordination Intern

Description 

Central Union Mission is seeking a highly motivated and outgoing individual to assist in placing and processing volunteers and assist with organization and distribution of in-kind donations. 

This position is unpaid. Hours are flexible depending on the student’s availability and schedule, but we would prefer to have someone who is willing to commit to 16-24 hours a week.

Finance Intern

Description 

Central Union Mission is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to assist our Finance Department. The individual will participate in the everyday tasks and functions of a finance department, including electronic and hardcopy file management. From managing monies from grants to payroll, our Finance Department is hard working and fast-paced—so be prepared to dive right in!

Social Media Intern

Description

Central Union Mission is seeking an intern with strong knowledge and understanding of the digital media landscape, including various social media websites. 

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to website content
  • Monitor and post on blogs, forums and social networks 
  • Online outreach and promotion using Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more 
  • Website and social media optimization 
  • Keyword analysis 
  • Cost/benefit analysis

Qualifications

Education Intern

Description

This intern position will work with the assistant director of education by engaging in the following: Promote the educational, job skills and literacy services available; Provide one-on-one and group tutoring and educational support to individuals identified assisting them in setting educational goals and connecting them with educational services and institutions and supports in the community; Develop relationships to provide educational supports in the local communities; Document services provided.

Requirements

  • Valid drivers' license, good driving record (at least three years in length) and own vehicle
  • Strong computer skills
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong adaptability, sense of responsibility and initiative, problem-solving and teamwork skills

Community Outreach Intern

Description

This position coordinates initiatives designed to promote Central Union Mission and its services to the community. Administers organizational programs and events aimed at addressing the needs of homeless and low-income people. Develops relationships with community leaders and serves as the organization's liaison with various constituents.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in cross-cultural and/or community relations
  • Ability to work independently; creatively; prioritize workload; intersect cross-culturally; well organized, etc. 
  • Interest and ability to work with a variety of constituencies, including government officials, community based organizations and low-income people. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to diversify approach when working with cultural communities. 
  • Possess research and project management skills.


Over Night Guest Supervisor Intern

Description

Provides supervisory assistance in facilitating Overnight Guest services, and managing the Gales facility at the Front Desk and throughout the building. Reports to Director of Overnight Guest Ministries; ministry, social work or psychology students preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist/oversee daily intake of Overnight Guest and Wake up
  • Assist/provide Security for and assist operations within the building
  • Assist/provide Program Support and Supervision of Front Desk Operations:  supervise work details for STP students;  supervise Overnight Guest activity; administer drug tests;  resolve disputes among men
  • Assist Lobby Manager/Hostess in supporting Mission visitors, donors and contractors including receiving, documenting and storing all donations and operating the front desk.
  • other duties as assigned

Requirements: 

  • Active Christian disciple at a local Bible-believing and - teaching church
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid driver’s license

Administrative Intern

Description

Provide office support functions including word processing, filing, copying, composing a variety of business documents, reception, gathering and compiling data, and balancing and coordinating a workload for multiple projects while meeting deadlines; Provide lead and/or back up receptionist support to include greeting visitors in person or by telephone and to connect those with the appropriate staff person or services that will best serve their needs in a friendly, professional manner. 

Requirements

  • High school graduate or enrolled in advanced degree program
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook) 
  • Proper telephone etiquette 
  • Excellent communication skills. including correct grammar and spelling 
  • Knowledge of office machines including fax, postage meter, copier, calculator, computer work-stations, telephone system, voice mail systems 
  • Ability to interact in a professional  manner 
  • Clearly written and spoken English skills

Business Administration Intern

Reponsibilities

Provide Business Administration support functions including:

  • Assembly of New Employee Personnel Packets
  • Correspondence between Mission and Vendors
  • Filling in basic information on Tax Forms
  • Assembly of Financial Binders
  • Order Office Supplies
  • Work with the Safety Committee to Coordinated Repairs of Damaged Mission Vehicles
  • Answering phones, data entry, conference coordination, meeting organizing, answering general inquiries from public.
  • Attending local meetings with leadership or staff as available and drafting meeting notes
  • Coordinate, create, or update project communications including updating and compiling print materials for events and coordinating travel 
  • Work with Finance and Accounting 

Qualifications

  • Business Administration and Human Resources with Finance & Accounting a Plus
  • Willing to volunteer. 
  • Time Commitment: 2-10 hrs/wk. 
  • Coursework in Business Administration or Project Management. 
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently; Interest in learning how a non-governmental organization (NGO) works. 
  • Candidate should possess an interest in the intersection between environmental health, societal health, and economic health. 
  • Prefer sophomore or higher student.

Business Management and Human Resource Intern

Description

Assist with the office management of the Administrative, HR and Finance Departments, providing clerical support and filing correspondence.

Reponsibilities

45% Office Administration:

  • Assist with the coordination of staff and volunteers working with Hispanic Ministries.
  • Assist with long range planning for continued improvement of Hispanic Ministries.
  • Provide administrative support for the Hispanic Ministries Director.

45% Pastoral care and special events:

  • Coordinate special projects e.g. Back to School, Christmas Bags, etc.
  • Manage transportation services.
  • Spiritual Counseling to advanced English clients.

10% Other duties as assigned:

  • Other projects as assigned by the Deputy Executive Director and the Director of Hispanic Ministries.
  • Represent the Mission at Churches and other interested organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree Desired
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook. 
  • Ability to utilize the internet for research. 
  • Qualified as an ESL instructor.
  • Communicative skills in Spanish.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • An active member in a local evangelical church.
