Mission to “Show Some Love” to Homeless

Holiday Weekend to Boost Emotional Health

Washington, D.C.—December 12, 2018The winter holidays can be emotional times for many people, but for people living on the street, Christmas can be a painful reminder of separation from family, poverty and failure.  That is why from December 13 to December 15, Central Union Mission is hosting “Show Some Love” with a concert, makeovers, food and a health fair, all intended to boost the spirits of people experiencing homelessness.

On December 13, the Mission welcomes Capital City Symphony playing a Christmas concert to inspire our guests. December 14 starts with haircuts, shaves, manicures and fresh clothes from the Mission Haberdashery. Then, through the generous donations of Passport Auto Group, Cassady & Co. Independent Wealth Management and other sponsors, the Mission will serve an elegant dinner for our overnight guests. We are excited to announce a special appearance by popular Christian comedian E-Boogie (Eric Demeche Wade.)

On December 15, the Mission will host an onsite health fair sponsored by Amerigroup offering free medical testing and information for those who may not have access to any other health care.

According to Mission Executive Director Joseph Mettimano, “What makes this event unique is that it affects many aspects of our guests’ lives: spiritual, physical and emotional. Its purpose is to encourage a man to enter one of the Mission’s programs and to help them overcome the trauma and depression that feeds into the cycle of homelessness. In the end, after we show we care about them, we hope they will start to care about themselves.”

We are so grateful for our Show Some Love sponsors, including: Adventure Dental, Amerigroup DC, employees of Amtrak, Chris McDaniel with Atperfection, Capital City Symphony, Cassady & Co. Independent Wealth Management, Chef Horatio Davis, DC Healthy Families, Fourk’d catering, Chef Jamie Gadson, Google, Hard Rock Café, Housing Counseling Services, Inc., MLK Deli, NCTA—The Internet and Television Association, Passport Auto Group, The Pinkston Group, James L. Brown of Saxophonic Praise and Eric Demeche Wade.

News media are invited to attend at any point. RSVP requested. Please contact Deborah Chambers for the schedule at 202-534-9965 or dchambers@missiondc.org for information.
